With many ex whalers throughout the world who have their own whalers
club, the Scottish club based in Edinburgh are all ex Christian
Salvesen Whalers. The club meets on a regular basis and offers
the ex whalers a chance to reminisce on their past experiences engaged
in the whaling industry. For an industry that ceased nearly forty
years ago there is still a tremendous camaraderie amongst the members
whether they were a captain, senior officer or a plain mess boy,
there is no distinction between the members. The club meets on average
five times a year and along with the meetings they often go on excursions
to places related to the whaling industry. In May 2002 the Ex Whalers
visited the Norwegian contingent of ex whalers and spent 5 days
in Tønsberg and attended a dinner hosted by the Norwegian Ex Whalers.
They also visited Sandfjord Whaling Museum and Husvik where the
factory ships were berthed during the summer months. With the trip
to Norway being such a success the next trip will take place in
May 2004.
